Chad is largely unexplored and unknown to traditional African travellers. Zakouma National Park is one of the rare gems that remain to be explored in Africa’s West African semi desert. Totally different, yet equally fascinating to learn and realise there is more to Africa’s habitats and wildlife than what is traditionally known.
Zakouma National Park is one of the last remaining intact Sudano-Sahelian ecosystems in Africa. This beautiful park is home to an astonishing array and volume of mammals and birdlife. New mammals such as the Kordorfan Giraffe, a rare Giraffe subspecies of which Zakouma is home to 50% of the remaining population, as well as the rare Lelwel’s Hartebeest . Buffalo number over 10 000 in number with Elephant herds growing fast as they are now fiercely protected. Zakouma is recognised as the most protected park in Africa. This beautiful park with its comfortable camps remains as one of Africa’s rare destinations, and a privilege to visit.
Ennedi Natural and Cultural Reserve, nestled in the northeast of Chad, is a natural sandstone masterpiece spanning 40,000 km2 of sculpted landscape marked by beautiful cliffs, canyons and natural arches. Labelled as an Eden in the Sahara, the Reserve lies within Ennedi Massif, a large Sahara mountain massif in Chad. Ennedi Massif was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2016 for its unique natural formations and rock art that dates back 7,000 years. Ennedi Natural and Cultural Reserve area formally came under the long-term management of African Parks in partnership with the Government of the Republic of Chad in February 2018
